(408) 792-2823   For Release on December 9, 2002     COUPLE FACE CHARGES IN MAIL AND IDENTITY THEFT CONSPIRACY   The Santa Clara County Office of the District Attorney has charged Linda Thi Vo, 20, of San Jose with fifteen felony counts including Conspiracy, Identify Theft, Grand Theft, Forgery, and Possession of Stolen Property. A joint investigation by San Jose Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Offices, and the United State Postal Inspection Service resulted in the recovery of mail stolen from over 170 separate victims. Vo admitted she would drive around San Jose and look for mailboxes with the outgoing mail flag up, as well as checking boxes for delivered mail.   Vo is charged with having stolen mail to acquire credit cards and pre-printed “cash advance” checks, which she used to make purchases both in person and via the Internet.  Vo also was reported to have passed computer created counterfeit checks assuming the identities of her mail theft victims. In addition, Vo is alleged to have stolen more than $13,000 in deposits containing cash and customer checks from her employer “Just Nails.”  Vo entered not guilty pleas in docket number CC269027.  The case is set for the Felony Advance Resolution Calendar in Department 29 of the Superior Court at 9:00 on December 23, 2002.   Vo’s boyfriend, Thanh Van Le, 27, of San Jose was arrested Friday, following an in-court outburst during Vo’s arraignment.  Le will face charges of Conspiracy and Possession of Stolen Property, he is scheduled for arraignment in Department 23 of the Superior Court at 2:00, December 10, 2002.   For more information on protecting your self from identity theft and what to do if you are victimized visit the Federal Trade Commission’s web site at http://www.ftc.gov/.   ###
