Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen today announced the appointments of two accomplished prosecutors to his executive management team: the head of the domestic violence team and a veteran homicide prosecutor.
Cindy Hendrickson and Brian Welch will officially become Assistant District Attorneys in January. Hendrickson, 49, currently heads the Family Violence unit. Welch, 51, leads the District Attorney’s North County Office in Palo Alto. Both have won awards for their successful prosecutions.
“I feel honored and lucky to work closely with these wise, hard-working, and deeply devoted public servants,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “They represent the excellence of the entire office and the community that we proudly serve.”
Second in command only to the District Attorney and his Chief Assistant, the six Assistant District Attorneys manage the teams that make up the largest prosecutorial office in Northern California. They closely confer with the District Attorney on such matters as “Three Strikes” and capital punishment cases, as well as criminal justice reforms.
Hendrickson was raised in a Virginian family of 13, including African-American, Vietnamese and Korean siblings. A Stanford University graduate, she has been the Supervising Deputy District Attorney for the Family Violence Unit since February. She came to the D.A.’s Office from a private law practice in 1995, serving stints in numerous prosecutorial units including sex assaults and elder fraud, for which she won an Office award. She previously managed the North County Office in Palo Alto. She is a board member of the St. Thomas More Society. She is married to Dave Hendrickson. They have three daughters.
A graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law, Welch has been a prosecutor since 1991, working for the Contra Costa County D.A.’s Office and then coming to Santa Clara County in 2002. He has served in numerous units including the sexual assault and homicide unit, which he supervised for three years. In 2011, he successfully prosecuted Jason Cai, a software engineer, for the 2008 murder of San Jose lawyer Xia Zhao. In 2012, he won the San Jose Police Department’s George W. Kennedy Excellence in Prosecution Award. Welch’s community involvement includes membership in the San Jose Rotary Club. He lives in San Francisco with his partner, Theo Grigorov.
The two new Assistants are replacing Marc Buller, who is retiring next month after a distinguished 30-year career, and David Howe, a well-respected prosecutor who retired earlier this year.
District Attorney Rosen also promoted two other veteran prosecutors to supervisory positions. Currently a member of the Sexual Assaults team, Clarissa Hamilton will oversee the North County Office. Marissa McKeown will move from the Gangs Unit to manage the Office’s Central Felonies team.   ###
