408-808-3778   MAN CONVICTED OF 1983 RAPE, MURDER OF TEEN   A Santa Clara County jury today convicted a former South Bay man for the rape and first-degree murder of a 17-year-old Campbell girl more than three decades ago.   Christopher Holland, 59, faces life in prison without parole when he is sentenced by the Hon. Arthur Bocanegra. There is no scheduled sentencing date yet.   “Cynthia Munoz’s family has waited 31 years to find justice for her cruel and senseless death,” prosecutor Christopher Walsh said. “Today a jury held Christopher Holland accountable for her murder and hopefully given Cynthia’s loved ones some measure of peace.”     On August 7, 1983, Munoz was found raped, strangled, and stabbed to death in her home in Campbell, just hours after visiting her disabled boyfriend in the hospital. The physical evidence from the crime scene strongly suggested this was a rape-murder and DNA evidence from an unidentified person was found. However, the forensic technology available at the time did not allow for a precise identification. Later, testing conducted after scientific advancements identified the defendant as the primary suspect.
Although the defendant did not provide DNA to Cold Case Investigators on the case, his brother provided his own. Familial DNA provided by the brother led to the 2007 arrest of the defendant for Munoz’s murder. In a bizarre twist, the DNA provided by the brother led to another half-brother’s conviction for the sexual assault of an 81-year-old San Jose woman. David Holland was sentenced to life in prison.    During Holland’s trial, four other women testified that the defendant had choked and used a knife on them during unreported rapes.   The defendant is also charged with the 1983 rape and murder of Tara Marowski, a 21-year-old San Jose woman slain four months before Munoz. This charge was severed before trial from the Munoz case and is currently awaiting trial.   # # #
