Vishal Bathija, Deputy District Attorney
(408) 792-2970   For release on August 12, 2009   MAN WHO FIRED GUN AT POLICE OFFICERS TO BE SENTENCED TO 48 YEARS IN PRISON   28-year old Gabriel Phillip Sanchez, of San Jose, pled guilty to three counts of assault with a firearm on a police officer and one count of discharging a firearm at an occupied motor vehicle.  Sanchez also admitted that he intentionally discharged the firearm while committing the crime.    On November 14, 2008, two San Jose Police officers were on patrol in the area of 10th and Keyes Streets when they observed Sanchez running across Keyes Street against a traffic signal.  The officers attempted to contact Sanchez for the violation, when Sanchez turned towards the officers’ vehicle and discharged four to six shots in rapid succession. Neither officer was injured. Sanchez successfully fled from the scene, but officers found him two hours later, barricaded in his girlfriend’s home. Sanchez eventually complied with commands to exit the home and was taken into custody.   A judge will sentence Sanchez to 48 years in state prison on October 15, 2009, at 9:00am in Department 30.   ###
