408-792-2792 For release on July 13, 2007 NEW ATTORNEY/LABORATORY LIAISON POSITION On July 16, 2007, Deputy District Attorney Dale Sanderson will assume the duties of the newly created position of Attorney/Laboratory Liaison for the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Santa Clara County District Attorney Dolores Carr previously announced her intention to create the Attorney/Laboratory Liaison position on May 2, 2007 during an office training presentation by Laboratory Director Benny Del Re. The county crime lab falls under the authority of the District Attorney. The purpose of this position is to improve communication with the Crime Laboratory, provide for attorney review of legal issues arising from laboratory functions, and advise the Laboratory Director on legal issues. “The importance of forensic evidence has increased dramatically over the past few years and advances in this area requires continuing training for both prosecutors and defense lawyers. One of the duties of the Attorney/Laboratory Liaison position will be to facilitate a joint training this fall in forensic science evidence, in collaboration with the Public Defender’s Office and the Santa Clara County Bar Association,” said D.A. Dolores Carr. The Attorney/Laboratory Liaison will also assist in the implementation of a new computer system in the Crime Laboratory, currently under construction, which is scheduled for completion in 2008. The Laboratory Information Management System will reduce the time to communicate laboratory test results to police agencies, prosecutors and defense lawyers. Dale Sanderson has worked in the District Attorney’s Office for 23 years and has prosecuted some of the office’s most serious and complex cases involving forensic evidence. He is an expert in forensic science issues and is an office resource in this area. In addition to his duties as attorney/laboratory liaison, he will continue to prosecute homicide cases. ###
