(408) 792-2792   For release on February 13, 2007   NEW ETHICS ADVISOR   On February 9, 2007, Santa Clara County District Attorney Dolores Carr announced the appointment of Deputy District Attorney Kathryn Storton as the office’s Ethics Advisor. Ms. Carr strongly believes in the importance of an ethics advisor as a resource for questions by deputy district attorneys that arise in the course of their work, to conduct periodic ethics training, and publish ethics guidelines. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office has had a full-time ethics advisor who gives advice on ethics questions for deputy district attorneys throughout the state for several years. Ms. Carr, as the District Attorney for the fifth largest district attorneys office in the state, believes that the time has come for the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office to have its own full-time ethics advisor.    Kathy Storton has been with the District Attorney’s Office for 24 years and has a reputation for honesty and integrity, coupled with a dedication to victims and to keeping criminals off our streets. She is highly respected by her peers in the district attorneys office, the defense bar, and the Superior Court bench. In addition to her regular courtroom duties relating to felony violations of probation, she is a recognized statewide expert in sentencing law whom our lawyers regularly turn for accurate guidance. She serves on the legislative committee for the California District Attorneys Association that reviews and makes recommendations for new legislation. Her yearly Legislative Update published by the California District Attorney’s Association is distributed to deputy district attorneys, judges and law enforcement agencies statewide, and she also gives yearly training to the local defense bar on this subject. She was instrumental in the creation of a restitution enforcement calendar to help redress crime victims that will start this month. She was also awarded, for the third time, the office’s Clayton L. Haupert award for outstanding work by a deputy district attorney in a non-trial assignment.    ###
