(408) 792-2943 For release on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 NEWS CONFERENCE SANTA CLARA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE TO HOST SOUTH KOREAN JUSTICE MINISTERS AS SOUTH KOREA RE-VAMPS ITS CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. 70 West Hedding Street, West Wing 3rd floor Training Room San Jose, CA 95110 South Korean officials are in the midst of working on major changes to Korea’s criminal justice system. To help in that important transition, two South Korean prosecutors will begin serving as law clerks at the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office each year. A delegation that includes prosecutors from the South Korean Ministry of Justice will arrive at the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office to sign an important “Memorandum of Understanding.” Those visitors will include IkHwan Kown, a high-ranking official in the South Korean Ministry of Justice, and WooJun Shin from the Korean Consulate in Los Angeles. The signing of the Memorandum will pave the way for the beginning of these important clerkships. Korea is intent on creating a modern criminal justice system, which will be based on what they perceive to be the best aspects of the systems used by countries throughout the world. In view of this goal, prosecutors are being sent to learn and observe the legal systems of the United States, as well as other countries. One major change to the criminal justice system that is currently underway in South Korea is the adoption of a hybrid jury trial system, modeled partially by the one we have in the United States. The experiences prosecutors from South Korea are able to gain at the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office during their clerkships will greatly benefit them in working towards their country’s modification of its criminal justice system.
