A Florida man has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman who was walking through a pedestrian tunnel in a popular area of Palo Alto in the middle of the day.

Daniel Widyanto Condronimpino, 34, of Palm Beach, knocked the Palo Alto victim down, strangled her, and sexually assaulted her as she tried to call out for help.

The violent attack, just yards away from a busy commercial street, was interrupted by a passerby. Condronimpino was arrested two days later by police in Berkeley, where he is suspected to have assaulted other women.

Condronimpino was arraigned on Thursday, April 13, 2023, in the Hall of Justice in San Jose on six felony charges, three of which were for sexual assault. He was remanded without bail. Condronimpino’s next court date is June 13, 2023. If convicted, he faces prison.

“Thanks to the quick and decisive actions of the witnesses and police here and across the Bay, this dangerous and violent criminal is off the streets,” DA Jeff Rosen said. “Now my Office will try to make sure he stays off of them.”

On April 9, 2023, around 2:45 p.m., a woman was walking her bicycle through the underpass between California Avenue and Alma Avenue in Palo Alto. The defendant entered the tunnel from the opposite side and the two passed each other. The defendant then crept behind the victim, violently shoving her to the ground causing her to hit her head on the pavement. The defendant grabbed the victim’s throat and began to strangle her, as he sexually assaulted her.

A witness entered the tunnel and saw the defendant over the victim at which point Condronimpino took the victim’s phone and fled.

Officers recovered the victim’s phone a few blocks away. Subsequent investigation produced multiple surveillance videos depicting Condronimpino leaving the underpass and moving along a path to where the victim’s phone was recovered.

UC Berkeley Police Department, who had an ongoing investigation into the defendant regarding several recent sexual assaults on the university campus, coordinated with Palo Alto Police Department. The partnering law enforcement agencies noted similarities between the subject's description and type of attacks. When video of the suspect in each investigation was compared, it was a clear match for Condronimpino.

On April 11, 2023, the defendant was under surveillance by UCBPD who placed him under arrest for one of the assaults they were investigating. UCBPD turned Condronimpino over to PAPD who arrested him.

Law enforcement is actively seeking to determine if there are other victims. If you were assaulted by this defendant, please call Palo Alto Police Department at (650) 329-2413.
