OFFICE MANAGER EMBEZZLED OVER $700,000 FROM LANDSCAPING COMPANY

The former office manager of a Palo Alto landscaping company faces prison time after being convicted of embezzling $736,000 from her employer.

Guadalupe Ruzic, 51, of Los Gatos, used her stolen proceeds to buy Gucci handbags, jewelry, a vacation timeshare, and 49er season tickets.

“The defendant’s greed and criminality brought the family-owned business that had employed her to the edge of insolvency,” Prosecutor Peter Waite said.

Ruzic pleaded no contest last month to felony embezzlement and forgery charges. The Hon. Vincent Chiarello is expected to sentence Ruzic to five years in prison on December 7, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in Dept. 89 of the Palo Alto Court.

Ruzic had kept the books for the company since 2014. Using QuickBooks software and a check stamp, she wrote checks to herself and made it appear the checks were paid to contractors. Meanwhile, contractors were not being paid.

The fraud was discovered in February.
