OPERATOR OF JIFFY LUBE STORES TO PAY $130,000 “M.C. LLC”, an owner of 20 Jiffy Lube facilities in Santa Clara and Contra Costa Counties, has paid over $130,000 in fines pursuant to a civil judgment after admitting to violations of environmental regulations. The violations included failing to mark and label tanks or containers storing hazardous waste, storing such waste without lids, failing to submit manifests concerning the transport and disposal of such waste, and other violations related to the safe operation of its facilities and emergency preparedness. As part of the settlement agreement, the judgment requires Jiffy Lube to (1) implement a training program for its staff, (2) implement an internal compliance program, (3) retain an environmental compliance specialist to audit its operations, and (4) submit each of its stores to inspection. Jiffy Lube cooperated with the investigation. The case was jointly investigated by the County of Santa Clara Hazardous Materials Compliance Division and the County of Contra Costa Health Services Hazardous Materials Program, and was prosecuted by the Environmental Protection Units of the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
