(408) 792-2593 For Immediate Release on May 23, 2002 This afternoon Father Edward Burke pled guilty as charged to committing a lewd act on a dependant adult. Father Burke was charged with one count of sexually assaulting a 51 year old developmentally disabled man who lived at the Novitiate in Los Gatos. The defendant, who was the librarian there, sexually assaulted him in his living quarters at the Novitiate. The charged offense took place between January 1998 and April 2000, when Father Burke was removed from the Novitiate. Father Burke faces a range of sentences of up to three years. The sentence will be decided at a sentencing hearing to be held 9:00 AM, June 28, 2002 in Department 31 at the Hall of Justice, 200 West Hedding Street in San Jose.
