SAN JOSE MAN ACCUSED OF DEMANDING MONEY FROM ELDERLY VICTIMS FOR UNAUTHORIZED WORK

55-year old Albert Robert Acuna, of San Jose, was arraigned on charges of Residential Burglary and Theft by False Pretense, stemming from two separate cases. Last week, Acuna was released from custody after he posted bail, but Santa Clara County Judge Thomas Hastings increased Acuna’s bail on Wednesday to $200,000, and remanded the defendant into custody.   In one case, Acuna allegedly knocked on the window of an elderly victim’s Santa Clara home, told her he had cleaned her gutters at her residence, and then demanded to be paid for his services. The victim had never hired Acuna to do such of work. The victim told police she just wanted Acuna to leave, so she wrote him a check for the money he demanded. The next day, he returned, again unsolicited, requesting money for doing some yard work.    In another similar case, police discovered that Acuna had done the same thing to another elderly victim, this time partially cleaning the gutters of her home, demanding more money than what was originally agreed upon. Out of fear, the victim wrote Acuna a check. Again, Acuna returned to her residence the next day and requested the victim pay him more money after he claimed he washed the windows at her home, which was not true.   Anyone with information about this case or any similar incidents is asked to call Sgt. Hoesing at the Santa Clara Police Department at (408) 615-4818, or Deputy District Attorney Cherie Bourlard with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office Elder Fraud Unit at (408) 792-2519.   ###
