NEWS RELEASE   FROM:
Jeffrey F. Rosen, District Attorney   CONTACT PERSON:
David Angel, Special Assistant District Attorney
(408) 792-2857   For release on March 17, 2011   SANTA CLARA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY JEFF ROSEN ANNOUNCES THE CREATION OF A CONVICTION INTEGRITY UNIT TO PROMOTE THE BEST PRACTICES IN CRIMINAL PROSECUTION   One of the first signature moves of newly elected District Attorney Jeff Rosen’s administration is the creation of a full time Conviction Integrity Unit. “Integrity is central to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. We will protect defendants’ rights, even as we justly prosecute them. For a prosecutor, the ends never justify the means, we do the right thing, and we do it the right way.”   To this end, Rosen has tapped veteran prosecutor, David Angel, to head the unit. Angel, who graduated from Harvard Law School with high honors, has extensive experience both as a prosecuting attorney and a reformer within the office. Angel helped draft the County’s eyewitness identification protocol, which is considered a model around the state. He was instrumental in the County’s protocol calling for the recording of suspect interviews in violent crimes. Angel also participated in an internal office investigation that resulted in the exoneration of a man wrongly convicted and sentenced to life in prison for a crime he did not commit.   The Conviction Integrity Unit is responsible for assuring that the District Attorney’s Office adopts the most professional and ethical practices in criminal prosecution to reduce the chance of a future wrongful conviction, and to evaluate and investigate past cases where a miscarriage of justice has been alleged.   # # #
