(408) 792-2792 For release on May 17, 2007 VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER CHARGED IN TWO DEATHS CAUSED BY INSULIN OVERDOSE Today the California Highway Patrol arrested John Mayfield of Paso Robles, California for felonies: two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, violations of Penal Code Section 191.5(a), and driving under the influence of insulin while causing injury, a violation of Vehicle Code Section 23153(a). The complaint also charges that Mayfield caused great bodily injury and injured a total of seven different victims who survived the fiery impact. The complaint arises from a July 10, 2006 crash in which Mayfield is alleged to have flipped his truck on the 11th street off ramp in downtown San Jose when he exited northbound highway 280 and continued at freeway speed. His truck landed on its side and slammed into a truck containing a young couple, Mary Bernstein and Robert Conway, waiting for a traffic light. Both vehicles and two other cars exploded into flames. The maximum sentence allowable is 16 years, 8 months. ###
