Our Victim Advocates serve as your connection to prosecutors, law enforcement and other criminal justice agencies, and help to ensure that you have a voice in the criminal justice process. Your Victim Advocate will link you with local resources, provide you with case updates, and support you during court hearings and testimony.
The Victim Services Unit helps victims from all walks of life and experiences, regardless of age, background and/or immigration status. Walk-ins are welcome and all services are free. Your Victim Advocate can assist you even if a suspect is not identified or if criminal charges have not been filed.
Our Claim Specialists can connect you with the California Victim Compensation Program (Cal VCP) can assist you and your family with out-of-pocket costs related to the crime, such as medical and counseling bills. To do that, Victim Advocates can help you fill out the proper forms.
You are entitled to certain, constitutional rights in the criminal justice process, which are described in the California Crime Victim’s Bill of Rights, also known as Marsy’s Law. Your Victim Advocate can help you to enforce these rights in court.

All 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have laws and policies that specify procedures for making and responding to reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. These laws require certain professionals, known as mandated reporters, to make an immediate report when they suspect or know of abusive or neglectful situations. State laws and policies also specify the required content of reports, criteria for screening reports, investigation procedures, timeframes for completing investigations, and classification of investigative findings. Many states also have special procedures for handling child fatalities and substance-exposed children. The National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC), located in Huntsville, Alabama, revolutionized the United States’ response to child sexual abuse. Since its creation in 1985, the NCAC has served as a model for the 1000+ Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) now operating in the United States and in more than 34 countries throughout the world, with 9 more currently in development. In this quickly changing environment, our children have needed to adapt to online learning — and for many of us — much faster than we anticipated. Here are some tips and tools to safely navigate the online world with children.
We need to be prepared to continue protecting kids to the best of our ability under any circumstances. The Protecting Children During a Crisis online training, provided by Darkness to Light, is designed to help you navigate through the unusual circumstances you might face during times of crisis. This change is any situation where you need to modify the steps you take to protect your children because of a situation that is out of your control. This training will help you consider your current strategies, help you identify the new situation, and help you change your strategy. The training, provided at no cost, takes 30 minutes and can be taken online at any time!
Having age-appropriate, open conversations about our bodies, sex, and boundaries is an important step in protecting children. Talking about personal safety and sex creates a protective bond between parent and child, increases confidence for both, and instills knowledge that makes children and teens much less vulnerable.
Whether you work with youth, are a parent, or are simply a member of a community, it is highly likely that someone you know or care for has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse. It’s going to happen whether you are prepared to deal with it or not – unless you stop it from happening. And the good news, it can be stopped. Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children® uses real people and real stories to show you how to protect children. You’ll meet survivors who lived through child sexual abuse, experienced its immediate and long-term effects, and ultimately were able to find healing. You’ll meet experts who work with children and families and confront abuse on a daily basis. Many of these survivors and experts are also parents themselves. This training is offered at no cost and is provided by the #FlipTheSwitch Campaign.
The Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training Project is a free training for professionals who are required by law to report suspected or known child abuse and neglect. Mandated Reporter Training provides the knowledge and skills to help these professionals carry out their responsibilities.
WAYS TO HELP AND PREVENT CHILD ABUSE
The first step toward fighting child abuse is education. Educate yourself on abuse and neglect and use this information to educate others. If you see child abuse, report it! Do your part to keep children safe.
Be intentional in your role as a parent, family member, neighbor, teacher, or friend. Together, we can help child abuse victims heal and grow and stopping other children from becoming victims.
