FROM: Amy Cornell, Public Information Officer (408) 792-2997   CONTACT PERSON: Cherie Bourlard, Deputy District Attorney Elder and Dependent Adult Financial Abuse Unit (408) 792-2519   For release on December 9, 2008   WOMAN SENTENCED FOR DUPING WOMAN OUT OF $108,000 IN PSYCHIC SCAM   A Santa Clara County judge sentenced 27-year old Lisa Miller to 60 days in county jail, 5 years probation, and ordered her to pay full restitution to her victim. In addition, she was ordered to never again engage in fortune telling, psychic readings, tarot card readings, love spell castings, palm readings, and spiritual advising. Miller pled no contest to one count of Theft by False Pretense in September. Lisa Miller convinced a woman who was “down on her luck” that she was cursed and needed spiritual cleansing. The victim gave her a total of $108,000 in cash and gift cards. As part of her sentencing condition, the defendant has already paid back the victim $61,000. Lisa Miller’s sister-in-law and mother-in-law are also facing similar charges. 56-year old Lola Miller pled guilty in August to two counts of grand theft for a psychic/fortune teller scam. Lola Miller is scheduled to be sentenced on January 26, 2009. 23-year old Danielle Miller, Lisa Miller’s sister-in-law, is scheduled for a preliminary setting on Thursday, December 11th.    ###
