Public and Law Enforcement Integrity Unit
The Public and Law Enforcement Integrity Unit (PLEI) handles the investigation of cases involving public officials and members of law enforcement who may have committed crimes in the course and scope of their official capacities and duties. The Unit may also investigate crimes committed by these actors in their personal capacity.
For law enforcement officers, the Unit examines all Officer Involved Incidents (fatal and non-fatal) as defined by County protocol. Additionally, the Unit examines incidents involving potential assault and battery under color of authority, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized access of criminal offender record information.
For public officials, the Unit examines theft, embezzlement or misappropriation of public funds, and removal, alteration, destruction or falsification of public records. The Unit also enforces the provisions of the Political Reform Act relating to campaign filings and practices and the Elections Code, as well as issues relating to the open public meeting law (Brown Act).
